Having grown up in a Navy family, I have an intimate relationship
with the military.
Our economy depends on the military and the military depend on our economy. Spouses of military members as well as military men and women who are transitioning into the private sector create a strong pillar for our expanding economy. We continue to nurture these relationships because it’s in everyone’s best interest. Farming and tourism together account for nearly two-thirds of the economy in Virginia Beach. We must preserve the Green Line in order to preserve our agricultural industry. For tourism, we need to continue to preserve strategies that will help us become a year-round destination. Two new initiatives Council has pursued has been ultra-high-speed broadband and the creation of a new biomedical research park. As these two initiatives take root, we will be able to offer the high-tech, high-paying jobs that will employ our children into the future.
